After the comparison between anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) and placebo in depressed patients, it has been demonstrated that AAS may be effective and safe for the short-term treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) [36]. However, the optimal combination of AD and different AD protocols has not yet been defined. Thus, the aim of the present review is to provide information about clinical and biological bases for an optimal design of adaptive sequential therapy to improve and individualize care for MDD patients [36].
It is crucial to define the optimal order and number of AD treatments for different phases of the treatment in MDD. For this purpose, it is recommended to consider a hierarchy of clinical effectiveness, the body of evidence on effectiveness. In particular, it has been shown that efficacy of AD in MDD patients is mainly demonstrated with a single treatment. However, short-term trials are often underpowered, and thus it is recommended to use data from long-term trials to confirm findings of efficacy [36].
